Welcome to the 2017 Cornell Theme Park Design Competition! This year's iteration will feature a design prompt challenging students to integrate new 3D technologies into an attraction package for a national theme park brand. Teams will take their vision from “blue- sky” concept to budgeted and rendered pitch, requiring a breadth of skills to create a successful package given spatial and financial constraints. Instructions and specifics will be sent to teams after the registration period closes.
*REGISTRATION HAS CLOSED*
The first place team will receive a $600 cash prize; two runner-up teams will receive $200.
Teams must be composed of 2 to 4 students currently enrolled full-time in an undergraduate or graduate program at an accredited college or university to be eligible to compete. All majors and disciplines are welcome! Teams may be made up of students from different colleges and universities. Participants may be required to provide evidence of enrollment if prompted by the Competition Board.
Registration opens on Wednesday, February 1st and closes on Sunday, March 5th at 11:59PM. After registration closes, teams will receive the design prompt and instructions via the email address provided below. Submissions will be due Sunday, April 9th at 11:59PM. Teams will be eligible for the $500 prize wallet and $100 mentor recruitment prize assuming compliance with the prompt's instructions and in accordance with the decisions of our Judging Panel.
Each team that recruits an industry mentor will receive a $100 prize, limited to the first 50 teams to register and submit in accordance with competition rules and regulations. This is not a required component of the competition but an added incentive for participants to expand their knowledge of design processes within the industry. Mentors cannot assist in the creation of any content included in the team's submission, but rather can provide advice, precedents, and support for participants as they complete the creative, technical, and financial tasks of the prompt.
Mentors can be any professional that works or has worked in themed entertainment design, engineering, or management, including but not limited to: theme parks, amusement parks, ride manufacturing and design, museums, zoos, corporate visitor centers, casinos, restaurants, branded experiences, multimedia spectaculars, retail spaces, resorts and hospitality, and destination attractions.
Mentors' qualifications and teams' eligibility for the $100 prize will be judged on a case-by-case basis by the Competition Board. Use your best judgement as to whether your proposed mentor has the experience to assist you in completing the prompt. We recommend exploring the Themed Entertainment Association's resources on the industry as well as their Member Directory, at www.teaconnect.org/.
